 Auckland:

North Korean President Kim Jong Un may still travel to Seoul for the first time in the coming weeks, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Tuesday, describing the trip as a major asset for the liberation of the country. peninsula.

Moon and Kim met three times in 2018, while South Korea hoped to welcome Kim's first visit to Seoul before the end of the year.

But the prospects for another meeting in the coming weeks have faded, denuclearization talks stalled, prompting Moon to say that the timing of the planned visit should not overshadow its historic character.

"It is possible that the visit of President Kim Jong Un to Seoul will be done later this year, but there are more important things than the moment chosen," he said during a visit translated during a visit to New Zealand.

"Whether or not this year is unimportant, the important thing is that the North Korean leader's visit to South Korea definitely speeds up the denuclearization process on the Korean peninsula."

Moon said Kim's visit to the South would also improve relations between the United States and North Korea, while Kim and President Donald Trump plan to follow up on their June summit in Singapore.

"I think our efforts will certainly give a positive impetus to the second United States-North Korea summit meeting," he said.

"President Trump and I share our point of view in this regard."

Moon highlighted the impact of Kim's presence in South Korea on both nations.

"This will be the first time that the North Korean leader will visit Seoul since the division of Korea into two countries," he said.

"Although there is no definite timetable, it remains very significant, we can improve relations between North Korea and the South and achieve permanent peace on the Korean peninsula and denuclearization."

North Korea and South Korea have begun removing mines and destroying military bunkers along their shared border as part of the relaxation.

However, Washington is taking a more cautious approach to Pyongyang after having interpreted differently a vague denuclearization document signed at the Singapore summit.
