Tesla President Elon Musk has been offered a "green card," China said Thursday, a privilege enjoyed by a group of foreign elites, including several Nobel laureates and a former NBA star.
Musk was in China to launch Tesla's first overseas plant, which will allow it to sell vehicles directly to the world's largest electric vehicle market.
The high-level entrepreneur met with Prime Minister Li Keqiang in Beijing on Wednesday, where they discussed Tesla's ambitions in China, said the State Council, the country's cabinet.
"I hope to make the Tesla factory in Shanghai a world example," Musk told Li, according to a report. "I really like China, I'm willing to come here more often."
Li replied, "If that's what you really have in mind, we can give you a" Chinese green card. "
Tesla declined to comment on the offer.
The number of foreigners with permanent resident status in China has exceeded 10,000 in 2016, according to the China Daily.
The club's members, according to the newspaper, include Dutch scientist Bernard Feringa, winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, former NBA star Stephon Marbury, and Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Mundell.
Getting a Chinese "green card" has been described as "one of the most difficult tasks in the world".
In contrast, more than one million people in the United States have become permanent residents in 2017 alone.
The new Tesla plant in China will eventually have an annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles, announced the California company, significantly increasing its production.
