TOKYO:

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that an agreement with Iran on his nuclear program was possible, attributing economic sanctions to restraint activities that Washington said was behind a wave of attacks in the Middle East.

"I really believe that Iran would like to make an agreement, and I think it's very smart of them, and I think it's an opportunity to arrive," Trump told a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo.

"He has a chance to be a big country with the same leadership," said Trump. "We are not looking for a regime change - I just want it to be clear - we are looking for no nuclear weapons."

In Tehran, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif declared that Iran was not seeking nuclear weapons, that its supreme leader had banned by a decree, adding on Twitter that US policies were harming the people of Iran and causing tensions regional.

"The actions-not the words-will show if that's the intent of @realDonaldTrump," Zarif said.

President Hassan Rouhani said in October that the United States was seeking a "regime change" in Iran, adding that the current US administration was the most hostile to which the Islamic Republic had faced in four decades.

Tensions increased between Iran and the United States after this month's attack on tankers in the Gulf region.

Washington, which strongly supports Tehran's regional rival, Saudi Arabia, blamed the attacks on Iran, which denies the charges.

The United States deployed a Carrier and Air Force Bomber Group and announced its intention to deploy 1,500 troops in the Middle East, raising fears of conflict.

Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Saturday that the United States had "deep and serious" information about the threats posed by Iran, without providing details.

Trump, on a four-day visit to Japan, hailed Abe's help to deal with Iran after broadcaster NHK said Japan's leader plans a trip to Tehran by mid-June. Iran said a visit was unlikely in the near future.

"I know for sure that the prime minister is very close to the Iranian leadership, and we will see what happens," said Trump.

At his joint press conference with Trump, Abe said Japan would do what it can on the Iran issue.

Last year, Trump withdrew the United States from an international nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, and imposed sanctions to try to stop Iran's international crude oil sales and strangle its economy.

Japan has been a major buyer of Iranian oil for decades before US sanctions, which Trump said came into effect.

"They were fighting in many places," he said of Iran. "Now they are withdrawing because they have serious economic problems."

Bolton, who spearheaded an increasingly brutal American policy against Iran, described the recent bombings of tankers off the UAE and a pumping station. Saudi Arabia, as well as a rocket attack in the Baghdad Green Zone, as "expressions of concern" for Iran.
