Donald Trump informed about the missile strike in Saudi Arabia: the White House

Washington:

US President Donald Trump was informed of a missile attack on Saudi Arabia, announced today the White House after Yemeni rebels claimed responsibility for an attack on a power plant in the south of the kingdom.

"The president has been informed of reports of a missile strike in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia," said White House spokesman Sarah Sanders in a statement.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and continue to consult with our partners and allies."

The Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm the attack.

On Wednesday night, Huthi rebels aligned with Yemen's Iran claimed to have hit a power plant in Jizan province (south), according to Al-Masirah TV.

Earlier Wednesday, a Saudi-led military coalition fighting rebels announced that a huthi drone had been intercepted in Yemeni airspace.

The rebels, who have been facing continued coalition bombing since March 2015, which has claimed numerous civilian casualties, have stepped up their missile and drones attacks at the border in recent weeks.

Last week, a rebel missile attack on the Southern International Airport in the city of Abha left 26 people injured, leading to the promise of" severe action " by the coalition.

Human Rights Watch called last week's strike an apparent "war crime", calling on the Huthis to immediately stop all attacks on civil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

The attacks take place amid increased regional tensions with Iran, which Saudi Arabia has repeatedly accused of arming the rebels with sophisticated weapons. Tehran denies the charge.

Following the recent rebel attacks, the official Saudi media announced that the coalition was stepping up its air raids on their positions in Hajjah province (northern Yemen) and the rebel-controlled capital Sana'a.

The coalition intervened in support of the Yemeni government in 2015 when President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi fled into Saudi exile as the rebels approached his last territory in and around the second city of Aden.

Since then, the conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, many of them civilians, said the relief agencies.
