President Donald Trump Monday afternoon ostensibly complimented District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine, a Democrat who claims in an ongoing lawsuit that Trump violates the anti-corruption clauses in the Constitution and last week became the third enforcement officer of the law to assign documents from the Inaugural Commission of the President.

"I feel like you are - as I know you," Trump told Racine in a speech to the White House before a rally of the National Association of Attorneys General.

"I feel I know you too, Mr. President," said Racine to the forefront of the public.

The couple's strange verbal salvo left spectators scratching their heads. Root has been one of the most aggressive of the many Democratic attorneys general facing the Trump administration.

Last year, Racine and Maryland's Attorney General Brian Frosh, a Democrat, sued Trump, claiming that payments made by foreign governments to his businesses - including Trump International Hotel - violate the emoluments clause. the Constitution, which prohibits US officials from taking anything of value from foreign leaders.

Last week, the President's Inaugural Committee received a subpoena from the Racine Office for documents relating to the Trump Organization or the Trump International Hotel. Racine's civil inquiry into the Committee appears to be focused on whether the Inaugural Committee violated the not-for-profit regulation by enriching the President's business interests.

This follows the subpoenas from the United States Attorney's Office in the Southern District of New York and the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General.

The exchange between Trump and Racine began when the president discussed the First Step Act, a bipartisan criminal justice bill that Trump signed in December.

After thanking The Association for its help with the bill, Trump singles out Racine.

"And special thanks to Attorney General Karl Racine Where is Karl? Karl? Karl? Hi, Karl," Trump said of his podium, pointing to Racine.

"Hi, Karl," he continued. "Great job, thank you very much, you were very helpful, everyone said I felt like you know it, it's pretty good."

"I feel like you too, Mr. President," said Racine, a line that brought laughter and applause.

In an interview after the event, Racine did not develop the meaning of his response to Trump.

He said the president's speech had crowned a meeting between attorneys general of both parties and White House officials, including Kellyanne Conway.
