Miami:

A powerful explosion caused by a gas leak took 21 people to a mall in Florida, the fire department said.

The explosion threw debris into the parking lot of Fountain Plaza shopping center, damaging a gym gym, numerous cars and holes in nearby buildings of the Plantation city, about 50 kilometers north of Miami.

"We did our workout, picked up the kids, got out, got into the car, left and everything exploded. It was a pretty crazy scene," said Jessi Walasheck, who witnessed the explosion.

Deputy Fire Chief Joel Gordon told reporters that two of the injured were in serious condition after the explosion, one of whom was at risk of death.

"We found patients scattered around the debris field, "he said, adding that injuries in general" are not as serious as we thought."

His department initially called a gas explosion and Gordon stated that ruptured gas lines were found in the debris, but the cause of the explosion was not confirmed.

No one's been reported missing.

"As serious as this may be ,the situation could have been much worse," he said.
