Washington:

The only black Republican congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives, who criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's attacks on ethnic minority legislators, announced on Thursday that he would not stand for re-election.

Will Hurd made the decision "with the aim of seizing opportunities outside the convention rooms to solve problems related to the link between technology and national security," he said in a statement.

The representative criticized Trump's attacks on ethnic minority lawmakers as"unworthy of the leader of the free world".

Hurd was one of four Republicans in the House to vote for a resolution last month condemning the president's "racist comments."

"There is no room in America for racism, sexism, anti-semitism, xenophobia and hatred", he tweeted at the time.

Referring to his decision not to run again, Mr. Hurd said, "two centuries ago, I would have been counted as three-fifths of a person. Today, I can say that I had the honour of serving three terms in Congress."
"America has come a long way and we still have much to do in our quest for a more perfect union. However, this lawsuit will be blocked if we don't all do our part," he said.
