Donald Trump stressed his intense personal support for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, even though he admitted that Pyongyang's recent missile tests "could" violate a UN resolution.

President Donald Trump stressed on Friday his strong personal support for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, even though he admitted that Pyongyang's recent missile tests "could" violate a UN resolution.

"There may be a violation of the United Nations, but President Kim does not want to disappoint me with a breach of confidence, North Korea has too much to gain," Trump said in a series of tweets on the subject.

"Chariman Kim has a great and beautiful vision for his country, and only the United States, with me as president, can make that vision a reality," added Trump, misspelling the official title of the North Korean dictator.

United Nations resolutions banning North Korea from nuclear weapons testing ballistic missiles, and its recent repeated testing of short-range missiles, have been condemned by European members of the United Nations Security Council.

Trump, however, rejected the tests as "standard".

The US president has invested a huge amount of political capital in his attempt to persuade Kim to end his country's isolation and abandon his nuclear arsenal.

However, despite three face-to-face meetings and numerous high-profile exchanges of letters, Trump has modest gains to show for his diplomacy.

In Trump's latest tweets, he again hinted that his personal touch would be enough to persuade Kim to reverse the regime's trend towards military nuclear power.
"He'll do the right thing, because he's too smart not to do it, and he doesn't want to disappoint his friend, President Trump!"the American president said.
